Thank you for your interests in the psychological scales Prof. Masato (Lab Director) developed. If you are interested to use the scales, please read the instructions below.

The Flow Scales

The Flow State Scale-2 (FSS-2) and Dispositional Flow Scale-2 are paid copyrighted instruments (Jackson & Eklund, 2002) developed by Dr Susan Jackson and Dr. Robert Eklund .

The Japanese versions of the FSS-2 and DFS-2 (JFSS-2 and JDFS-2: Kawabata, Mallett, and Jackson, 2008) are also paid copyrighted materials although any money is given to the developer of JFSS-2 and JDFS-2 (Dr. Kawabata).

If you want to use JFSS-2 and JDFS-2 for your research, they can be purchased at MindGarden (see the link below). If you purchase them, you do not need to seek permission to use from Dr. Masato Kawabata.

The Sport Motivation Scale-II

Since the Sport Motivation Scale-II (SMS-II: Pelletier et al., 2013) was published, Kawabata and co-workers have translated/adapted the scale from English into Japanese and examined the factorial validity and reliability of the Japanese versions of the SMS-II (SMS-II-J: Kawabata et al., 2017, 2022). However, those Japanese versions of the SMS-II consistently encountered discriminant validity issues (Kawabata & Mallett, 2013).

Dr. Kawabata conducted another study to overcome the discriminant validity issues and establish the SMS-II-J with sufficient factorial validity and reliability. The preliminary results (Kawabata, 2025) were presented at the 16th ISSP World Congress in Hong Kong.

Once the manuscript of the SMS-II-J is published in a peer-reviewed journal, it will be available on the website of the Center for Self-Determination Theory (CSDT)

If you are interested in using the SMS-II-J for your research, please wait until then. Thank you very much for your patience and understanding.

The Subjective Vitality Scale

The Subjective Vitality Scale (SVS: Ryan & Frederick, 1997) is a self-report instrument to measure one’s level of vitality and has been widely used in psychological studies.

The Japanese version of the SVS (SVS-J) was validated for Japanese adults (Kawabata, Yamazaki, Guo, & Chatzisarantis, 2017).

The SVS-J is available on the website of the Center for Self-Determination Theory (CSDT).
